- The signal offers free storage of encrypted messages
- The storage will not include established messages to disappear
- The messaging platform will not have access to its encrypted vault
The signal, creator of one of the best encrypted messaging applications, will offer 100 MB of cloud storage so that all users store and support messages and media.
The subscription storage option will allow users to store essential elements of the last 45 days, and file the messages to act as a backup in case a device is lost or steal.
The file will be updated daily, which means that users will never lose more than a day of messages. The established messages to disappear after 24 hours will not be stored.
Free signal messages storage
The free cloud backup solution is also accompanied by a 100 GB cloud backup storage option for $ 1.99 per month that will allow users to store significantly more messages and means. The function will be available on iOS, Android and Desktop.
Everything contained in the 100 MB and 100 GB stores will be protected in a encrypted folder with a 64 -characters key. However, this is a double -edged sword, since although the signal will not be able to access any of the messages stored in the folder, they cannot restore access if it loses their key.
Jim O’Leary, Vice President of Engineering of Signal, said that “this is the first time we offer a paid feature. The reason we are doing this is simple: the media require a lot of storage, and store and transfer large amounts of data is expensive.”
“As a non -profit organization that refuses to collect or sell its data, the signal must cover those costs differently from other technological organizations that offer similar products but support selling monetizing ads and data.”
O’Leary also explained that in the future, Signal will also allow you to choose a safe backup location and the ability to synchronize your encrypted data between compatible platforms.
