Karachi:
The Sindh government has approved a 15 percent increase in the annual subsidy for public sector universities in the province, which increases the total assignment of RS34 billion to RS40 billion for fiscal year 2025–26.
According to the officials, the summary of the increase, supervised by the Higher Education Commission, Sindh, was approved by Prime Minister Murad Ali Shah before the provincial budget presented on June 13. The improved subsidy has been incorporated into the annual budget.
The recommendation to increase the subsidy was made by a committee headed by the former Foreign Minister of the University of NED, Dr. Sarosh Hashmat Lodi. With this approval, the 32 public universities in SENDH will see a corresponding 15% increase in their individual financing assignments.
After the increase, the subsidy for the University of Karachi will now be located at RS3.554 billion, while the University of Sindh in Jamshoro will receive RS3.410 billion. The University of Engineering and Technology of NED will receive RS2,578 billion, and the University of Engineering and Technology of Mehran will obtain RS2.149 billion.
The subsidy for the University of Health Sciences has risen to RS1,294 billion, while Jinnah Sindh Medical University will receive RS1,176 billion. The subsidy for the University of Medical and Health Sciences of Liaquat has increased to RS1,595 billion.
Among business schools, Sukkur University was going to receive RS1,916 billion, and Karachi was assigned to RS692 million. The University of Agriculture of Sindh, Tandojam, has been assigned RS2.259 billion.
Other assignments include RS498 million for Government College University Hyderabad, RS1,812 billion for the University of Engineering and Technology Dawood, and RS1,645 billion for Shah Abdul Latif Khairpur University.
In addition, the Universidad Sindh Madressatul Islam will receive RS684 million, the Metropolitan University of Karachi RS284 million and the Shaheed Benazir Bhutto University, Lyari, RS376 million.
