There was hardly anything from Syracuse’s defense to stop the number 23 of Tennessee on Saturday, but they certainly tried.

The volunteers left Atlanta with a 45-26 victory over the Orange, but a moment in the second quarter during what became a TouchDown campaign so that Tennessee took the speakers of the game by surprise.

With approximately 1:25 remaining in the first half, the volunteers marched through the field, rapidly winning 63 yards in two plays.

After Joey Aguilar hit Mike Matthews for 16 yards, Syracuse’s defender took Samuels Jr. fell to the grass, and another player by his side also seemed to be going down before standing.

That stopped the clock, for disgust not only of Tennessee fans, but the commentators Bob Wischusen and Louis Riddick on the call.

“This is not a good look. This seemed shameless,” said Riddick. “They are trying to take energetic measures against this kind of thing: pretend injuries. And I don’t want to assume anything about any player, but he seemed suspicious.

“That is not what university football wants,” Riddick added. “They are trying to get this out of the game. We strategically understand why the defenses try to do this when they are in the heels … but this is something that you are going to end up being penalized if the referees catch it.”

Samuels returned to the countryside shortly after, that Wischusen, who called Tennessee to do it before, called a “miraculous recovery.”

The apparent tactic did not work because Tennessee rose 31-14.
