The torrential rain floods Lahore, kills five in Punjab

Lahore: The heavy rains that began at 5 AM on Thursday whipped Lahore for more than six hours, immersing low areas, paralyzing traffic and causing structural damage to several districts in Punjab.

The rain stopped around 11:30 am, but the drainage work of the WASA teams is still ongoing.

The city of Nishtar received the heavy downpour, registering 182 mm, while the rainwater entered houses in Dhampura, Shah Jamal, Choburji and the surrounding localities. Vehicles and motorcycles were stranded in deep water, especially in underground steps and along the main roads.

A house and a mosque in Shah Jamal also flooded. Incidents of wall and roof collapse in Lahore, Okara, Sheikhupura and Pattoki were reported, leaving five dead people, including a woman and two children, and wounding several others.

In Sheikhupura, two children, Fatima, 5, and Arham, 2 years old, were killed when the home of his house collapsed. In Pattoki, a 55 -year -old woman named Salma Bibi and a 12 -year -old boy named Sujawal lost their lives in separate incidents.

In Lahore, a child was electrocuted while bathing in rainwater collected on a vacant plot near Lari Adda.

Katchi Abadis and Lahore’s underground steps were strongly affected, including areas around Kalma Chowk, Ferozepur Road, Haji Camp, Channel Road and Harbanspura. Despite continuous drainage efforts, many neighborhoods remained flooded.

LaHore Electric Supply Company (Lesco) reported interruptions in 142 feeders, interrupting the energy supply in many areas. The CEO Lesco urged citizens to avoid energy and infrastructure posts during wet conditions and said the restoration work would begin once the rain stopped.

The managing director of WASA, Ghaffar Ahmed, visited the affected areas and ordered the staff to quickly eliminate important roads. Punjab Prime Minister Maryam Nawaz thanked WASA staff who worked through the storm and ordered uninterrupted operations until all the roads were clear.

The Department of Meteorology has predicted that the monsoon rains will continue intermittently until July 13, with more expected downpours in Lahore, Jhelum, Sialkot, Nareowal and Hafizabad in the next 24 hours.
