The NCAA transfer portal possibly gives students athletes more flexibility than ever.
In the past, the university athletes who chose to transfer could not compete in the first year after changing schools.
The portal gives them the opportunity to play immediately. Radical policy changes almost always provide both planned and involuntary consequences.
Since the advent of the transfer portal and the increase in the name, image and image (NIL), the gap between university programs with reinforcements and pocket students and smaller schools with less financial resources has apparently grown.

The coach of northern Illinois, Thomas Hammock, who leads a program that does not compete at a Power Four conference, suggested that the transfer portal contribute to an environment in which the players and priorities of their parents are in the wrong place.

“I enjoyed my university experience,” Hammock said. “I did not get a ten cents. But the lessons I learned were more valuable than any money you can pay me. I appreciate that because that is long term. People are losing the fact that this is in the short term.
“Do not lose the long -term approach. Obtain your title and learn valuable lessons that will help you in the long term of your life. That is all the purpose. This is a transition from being a child to an adult. I hope people do not lose the focus of that.”

Hammock pointed out more intangible opportunities available to athletes.
“Everyone talks about everything else besides the most important thing about going to college,” Hammock said. “Because if you go to university to get a couple of dollars, you could also get a job.
“This is too difficult to get a couple of dollars. Learn the lessons you need to learn to succeed in life during the next 40 or 50 years of your life. I would do it for free due to the things I learned. That is why I am standing here today, so I learned at the university. Not for how much someone gave me.”

Hammock obtained all-American academic honors twice during his game days in northern Illinois. The Niu Huskies have qualified for a bowl game in three of the last four seasons. Hammock trained Niu for an 8-5 record last year.
