- A cyber attack has been addressed to the Unfi food distributor
- The incident has the brands of a ransomware attack
- UNFI is moving towards recovery, but warns the delays that could still continue
United Natural Foods Inc (UNFI) says that it is making a “significant progress” towards restoration safely, and is increasing the operational capacity, after a recent important cyber attack that caused generalized delays and system closures.
In a statement, UNFI, one of the largest food distributors in North America, reassured customers who are working to increase their operational capacity and compliance with orders.
“We are also using alternative processes to ensure that our customers receive the products they need while we continue to progress to restore our technological abilities,” the statement said. “Our clients, suppliers and associates remain our highest priority, and we are working closely with them in each step of the road.”
Unknown attackers
The scope of the attack is not yet known, and no criminal group has assumed responsibility, although investors were told that the entire Unfi network closed, a movement that meant that customer orders could not be fulfilled.
UNFI has not revealed the nature of the attack, but generally an organization that turns off its network is an indication that this was a ransomware attack.
Organizations disconnect from systems to prevent additional devices being encrypted by attackers, and can mitigate the risk of data exfiltration and protect confidential information.
UNFI is a main distributor of the retail giant Whole Foods, which has been seriously affected by the attack, which occurs shortly after three mass retailers from the United Kingdom were beaten by cyber attacks that led to the out -of -line systems and interrupted operations for weeks.
2025 has been a dangerous year for retailers, with these supposed ransomware attacks that cost the organizations affected millions of time in time of inactivity, lost data, loss of reputation and possible future regulatory fines.
