- Windows 11 25h2 has been put on performance proof
- Based on a set of 40 reference points, it will not be faster than 24h2
- In fact, performance is a dead heat, but expected, since 25h2 is a smaller update that is not making big changes
Windows 11 25h2 will not be faster than version 24h2 in terms of its general performance, according to some new tests, although this should not be a surprise.
Phoronix.com, a site focused on all Linux things, conducted a series of tests (marked by Tom hardware) that compared the performance of Windows 11 25h2 with different Ubuntu flavors, as well as Windows 11 24h2 reference tests.
We must, of course, keep in mind that Windows 11 25h2 is not yet outside, so this comparative evaluation is using the previous (almost finished) version of the operating system (and I will return to that point).
The tests, which covered about 40 different reference points of several applications, including Luxcorender and Intel Open Image Denoise, show that Windows 11 25h2 has a performance identical to version 24h2 depending on the average of the results.
Ubuntu Linux was about 15% faster than Windows versions in this test battery, in case you are curious.
The comparative evaluation was carried out with new facilities of these operating systems using stock settings on a PC with an Ryzen 9950x processor and 32 GB of RAM.
ANALYSIS: There is still no performance elevation, but a more receptive operating system may not be far away
Of course, this is a previous version of Windows 11 25h2 as noted, so it is not yet completely finished. That said, it is almost done; In fact, the newest flavor of Windows 11 is now in its final test phase, and it is likely to be launched next month. Therefore, in a realistic way, there will be no significant difference in the levels of performance between the previous view of current launch in the last stages of the tests and the finished version of Windows 11 25h2.
However, this is not surprising, since Microsoft has already made it clear that Windows 11 25h2 is a minor update. We will obtain some new features, of course, but not many of them, it is not exactly clear what the cut will still do. However, under the hood, the operating system is still quite identical, and that is exactly what indicates the dead heat in the performance bets we see here.
While it is a game tied in terms of the average of this set of reference points, it should be taken into account that Windows 11 25h2 actually loses (for a percentage point or two) in some tests and wins by a nose in others to make things average, of course.
In any case, if I expected Windows 11 25h2 to cure some of the hypo around the response capacity that may have experienced with 24h2 or improve general performance, you can forget that idea.
However, Microsoft is working at least to reinforce the performance levels of Windows 11 in a new scheme with operators of the operating system by which the records are maintained when a PC experiences slow performance. The hope is that it helps Microsoft to diagnose and solve problems around the slow performance in Windows 11 higher, so the crossed fingers that become the case.
Since this year’s update is small, the probability is that in 2026 we will see greater Microsoft changes, maybe even Windows 12 or what is the next iteration of the desk operating system, but personally I think we will wait longer for that next generation version).
