- The Windows 11 error with the Intel audio driver has just solved
- This fault has long existed – One year, in fact
- Stopped the PCs with the 11th generation CPU of Intel to obtain the 24h2 update
It takes to solve years to solve another error in Windows 11, one that prevented a considerable number of people who use certain intell processors to update the latest version of the operating system, but this time, it was not Microsoft’s fault.
The Windows 11 24H2 fault appeared almost exactly one year ago, pressing PC with specific versions of the Intel Smart Sound Technology (SST) controller, which is an audio controller. (This error has been seen in the distant past, and I will return to that).
As Newin reports, the problem only affects Windows 11 PCs with Intel’s 11th generation processors. Those with a computer built around a chip from Lake Rocket (or Tiger Lake) were unable to update to version 24h2, since Microsoft blocked these PC with what is known as a ‘compatibility retention’.
Microsoft was first marked by Microsoft in the Windows Release Health Status Panel on September 30, 2024, and the error caused the devices to be blocked with a blue death screen (now a black screen).
In this case, Microsoft was confident that Intel fixed this controller to be compatible with Windows 11 24h2, and that took a long time, but the problem was finally resolved so as of September 26, 2025.
Those with an Intel Rocket Lake CPU that so far have not been able to obtain the 24H2 update must be able to download and install the Intel SST controller, which is version 10.30.00.5714 (or 10.29.00.5714, depending on its exact version of Windows) or posterior. Whatever the case, you want the Intel SST controller to end in 5714.
Microsoft explains that this Intel controller in Windows Update should be offered, so register there and install it. Once this is done, you can verify the updates again, and Windows 11 version 24h2 must be offered, finally. (You can still take a little time for Windows Update to withdraw the change in your system).
If, even after waiting for a while, the Intel SST controller is not offered through Windows Update, then Microsoft explains that “it is possible that the controllers for this audio controller have not developed for the hardware configuration of their specific device.”
If that is the case, you must communicate with the manufacturer of your PC to obtain more information about when the necessary controller will be implemented for your device.
ANALYSIS: LEA-VU WITH 22H2
This error is in addition to another pair of recently fixed technical problems that prevented updates to Windows 11 24h2, which also took most of the year to resolve. Having stumbling blocks like these spinning for so long, and these problems are only solved just before the next annual update for Windows 11, 25h2, it is clearly not a great appearance for Microsoft.
Although as noted, Microsoft was waiting for Intel to formulate the cure, so the software giant gets a pass this time.
It is also worth noting that this TSM complication with the 11th Intel generation CPU was seen before, in 2022, where the failure avoided the updates to Windows 11 22h2 (and 21h2, the original incarnation of the operating system), blocking the route for those who seek to migrate from Windows 10 a time. Therefore, it was quite strange to see this again last year; I hope it will not be a problem with the 25h2 update.
If you ask how many people could still execute 11th generation processors, Intel Rocket Lake chips are probably the engine of something like 10% of Windows PCs, possibly more as 15%, if we move forward by approximate estimates generated by AI (Copilot, Chatgpt and Gemini quite agree on this). While we need to season so to a large extent, since it is simply educated conjectures, there are clearly a lot of people who still use a PC with an Intel 11th Gen engine that will have suffered with this bugbe.
