If you feel like it this Christmas, you can treat your guests to a turducken, a Cajun creation in which a chicken is stuffed with a duck and then the duck is stuffed with a turkey*. Mixx Audio seems to have created the audio equivalent: its new Analog+ all-in-one music system features a CD player built into a turntable, in the center of the platter, so they’re concentric circles.
“We wanted to create something truly distinctive,” says Mixx Audio CEO Prash Vadgama, and I’d say it’s mission accomplished. It’s very strange, but it makes sense for people who are short on space and want a single device that does it all.
MIXX Analog+: key features and specifications
Inspired by the look of 1980s hi-fi components and available in black or white finishes, the Analog+ is a fully automatic turntable with an Audio-Technica AT3600L cartridge and the ability to play 7- and 12-inch records at 33 or 45 rpm.
There is Bluetooth 5.3 and auxiliary output. Everything can be controlled using the included remote control.
It’s a simple design with little visual clutter; All controls are mounted on the front, where there is also a small screen to show you progress tracking and mode selection. But while it is simple, it is also very unusual, due to the top CD loading mechanism in the center of the turntable.
The CD player works, of course, with regular CDs, but it also plays CD-R and CD-RW audio and data discs. It will play WAV, MP3 and WMA files up to 16-bit/44.1kHz, as well as 48kHz for WAV files.
It’s very strange, and as far as I know, the first of its kind (Mixx certainly claims this): there have been many LP/CD combo players from all kinds of brands, but they have the CD transport as an obviously separate mechanism from the turntable.
Whether this is inspiration or madness will emerge as the reviews come in, but there’s no denying Mixx’s ability to think differently here.
The Analog+ is available now for £299 (around $400 / AU$605).
*I wonder: what combinations were tried before ending with that one?
