The New York Yankees had a moment of silence before Wednesday night against the Detroit Tigers to honor the influential conservative Charlie Kirk. Kirk died after receiving a shot at an oratory event at Utah earlier in the day.

“Before tonight, we celebrated a moment of silence in Memoriam of Charlie Kirk. Kirk founded the Youth Activist ‘Turning Point Usa’ and had become a fixed element on the university campus. Charlie Kirk, husband and father of two children, was 31 years old,” the team said in an X post.

“The conservative activist and founder of Turning Point USA was declared dead shortly after being shot during an event of the Campus at the University of Utah Valley.”

President Donald Trump He confirmed Kirk’s death in a publication about Truth Social.

“The great, and even legendary, Charlie Kirk, is dead. No one understood or had the heart of young people in the United States of America better than Charlie. He was loved and admired by all, especially me, and now, he is no longer with us,” Trump wrote. “Melania and my sympathies are with their beautiful wife Erika and her family. Charlie, we love you!”

The incident caused emotional responses from many prominent figures in the world of sport, including former Yankee Mark Teixeira and the new york field marshal Giants Jaxson Dart.

The video published in the event seemed to show Kirk filming while talking with the crowd from under a white emerging tent. After the shot, the crowd dispersed, with the spectators shouting: “Run, run, run!”

The FBI said that “the theme” of the shooting is in custody.
