- These five Apple products have spent years without updates
- Include the vision pro, Studio Display, Mac Pro and more
- This is what the last rumors say about futures for each
Apple has a wide range of future products in the pipe and we will see many of them in its great September 9 event, including new iPhones, Apple Watches and Airpods. But there are also many existing products that feel that they are trapped in limbo, sometimes years pass without updates or attention.
What are these devices and what will Apple do with them? If you have been waiting patiently some new Max Airpods or a new study screen, we have gathered the last speculation about those increasingly dusty models (and three other notable examples) below.
While this is still only speculation, and there is always the potential of Apple’s surprise, it should help you give you an address on whether you will continue waiting for these apparently forgotten products …
1. Airpods Max
As Mark Gurman of Bloomberg and his recent power in the newsletter pointed out, the Airpods Max headphones have not had a significant update in about five years.
Of course, Apple gave them a USB-C port in September 2024, but that was more or less the only change of note (apart from the audio support with lossless cable). Apart from that, they remain as they were when they launched in 2020.
Unfortunately, Gurman does not believe that Airpods Max will be updated in the short term. In his bulletin, he affirms that, despite being visibly popular, the headphones are “in a strange commercial place” where they are too popular to suspend, but apparently they are not popular enough to be significantly updated.
As we have argued, that seems strange when an H2 chip (putting them along with Airpods Pro 2) could be sufficient along with other minor updates. But it seems that Airpods Max owners will have to continue waiting for an update, or change some of the other best headphones with ear.
- Verdict: Interestingly, an update still seems unlikely in the near future
2. Apple Vision Pro
Apple’s vision pro headicular arrived with a large amount of fanfare in 2023, but it is safe to say that it has never been up to the exaggeration.
The lack of convincing applications, an awkwardly heavy weight and an astronomical price label have slowed sales and made potential customers think twice before squeezing the trigger. As Bloomberg Mark Gurman’s journalist said recently in his last power in the newsletter, the Vision Pro runs the risk of becoming “a loss of a decade and billions of dollars for Apple.”
There are rumors that Apple is working in an updated version with a new chip, with a cheaper and cheaper model after that. Unfortunately, there are no rumored dates for any of the models, so an imminent update seems very unlikely. It seems that Apple’s concept of ‘spatial computing’ still needs much more time in the oven.
- Verdict: Apple is working on the successors of Vision Pro, but do not wait for them until 2026
3. Imac Pro
The IMAC Pro was launched in 2017, but it was officially suspended four years later in 2021. However, almost from the day Apple stopped selling it, there have been rumors that it is destined to return.
Until now, however, those whispers have not led anywhere, with the last significant rumors from the Ming-Chi Kuo analyst just before Apple launched the Mac Studio in 2022.
Since then, the speculation has cooled, with Mark Gurman of Bloomberg writing in his possession in the bulletin in 2023 that the IMAC Pro “has been inside and outside the Apple route map.”
Despite this, rumors have continued that Apple could be working in an IMAC with an exhibition greater than 27 inches, 30 inches or even 32 inches. But with Apple continuing by pushing the combination of a Mac Mini or Mac Studio with a large external screen, this still seems unlikely in the near future.
- Verdict: At this time, it seems that the IMAC Pro will remain in the Apple cemetery
4. Mac Pro
The Mac Pro is easily Apple’s most expensive computer, but despite that, or that is why it is not particularly convincing at this time.
This is because its ultra chip is surpassed by several of the other Apple chips, and the M4 and M3 ultra chips were lost both, which are more recent than anything offered by Mac Pro.
There are statements that Apple is working in a M4 ultra version of Mac Pro, and cannot arrive soon. When you pay more than $ 6,999 / £ 7,199 / AU $ 11,999 for a computer like this, you should not have obsolete hardware. Fortunately, it seems that this will not be the case for much longer.
- Verdict: An ultra version of the Mac Pro seems increasingly likely for the end of 2025
5. Study exhibition
Apple’s Studio screen was designed to be a monitor for creatives who did not want to splash on the XDR display of $ 4,999, and for a time did a great job.
However, it has not been touched since March 2022, and that is a long time in the world of technology. It means that the screen is really beginning to show its age among a large number of alternative options.
Fortunately, the recent speculation of Macrumors suggests that Apple is working on a study screen 2, and that it could come with a backlight led by Mini. That should mean deeper blacks and many local attenuation areas for high contrast and brightness.
However, if you are looking to update soon, the bad news is that this new monitor is likely to reach the beginning of 2026.
- Verdict: An study exhibition 2 is still on the cards, but rumors suggest that it will not be launched until the beginning of 2026
