This $50 IKEA air purifier looks like a small Scandinavian suitcase and has everything you need to have clean air wherever you go.

Looking for an air purifier that doesn’t look clinical and won’t break the bank? Head to IKEA. The Swedish home goods titan has a $50 compact purifier that looks like a small Scandinavian suitcase, and I can see it fitting just about anywhere.

There are many compact purifiers on the market, but I have never seen one like this. The IKEA UPPĂ…TVIND has a simple, square design that can stand or be placed on its side, and a dove gray carry handle so it can be easily transported from room to room depending on where it is needed. Despite the white color, it doesn’t look clinical at all: it almost looks like a speaker.

The functionality also seems very solid. There is an EPA12 filter that can remove 99.5% of small particles in the air, including PM2.5 particles (small inhalable particles measuring between 0.1 and 2.5 micrometers in size), pollen and dust. An LED indicator will tell you when it’s time to change the filter (approximately every six months) and replacements are available at IKEA. You’ll have three fan speeds to choose from, depending on the noise level and purifying efficiency you need.

IKEA recommends UPPĂ…TVIND for rooms 75 square feet. This is based on five complete air changes per hour, which is on the high end of what is generally recommended; You could certainly use it in a larger room and have a slightly less efficient purification rate. The CADR (clean air delivery rate) is 18 cubic feet/min on the lowest setting and 55 cubic feet/min on the highest.
