The new data of the Canals industry analysts have revealed that PC suppliers are storing the inventory in the anticipation of the highest Trump administration rates, but they are not selling enough to clear their actions.
A considerable increase of 15% in PC shipments in the US were observed during the first three months of 2025, however, this also aligned with an excess in the inventory, with consumers with much less likely to renew their devices this year compared to companies.
The market perspective is aligned with higher rates suspicions, and the US PC shipments are expected to only grow 2% in 2025 despite the strong growth of the first quarter.
American suppliers are preparing for higher prices
According to the data, the inflation of broader tariffs and the general economic uncertainty is seeing that consumers cling to their devices for a longer time than usual.
Canalys expects consumers’s PS shipments to decrease 4% this year, compared to the 8% increase in PC shipments to companies, largely driven by the October end date for Windows 10.
The research director Ishan Dutt explained: “Although the PC currently remain exempt, the broader tariffs that affect the categories of key expenses have already resulted in an inflationary pressure.”
In addition, the exaggeration around the PC of AI seems to have domesticated. High prices, the lack of clear value and confusing messages are preventing many buyers from going to the car as the PCs remain in their first generation.
The Channels Research Manager, Kieren Jessop, explained that bad battery failures, slow performance or hardware failures tend to push consumers to updates, indicating that the deadline of Windows 10 may not be a motivation for consumers as it is for companies.
A March 2025 survey suggested that 14% of customers are now aware of Windows 10 deprecation, and additional 21% do not plan to update as a result.
Meanwhile, US storage continues to distort the Global PC shipping figures, with global PC shipments Q1 2025 9%more. DUTT summed up: “This preventive strategy allowed manufacturers and the channel to supply before potential costs, which increases sales shipments despite the stable demand of the end user.”
