- Highpoint Rocketstor 8631CW gives you a 64 GB/S GPU bandwidth: No controllers or software are needed
- Real Pcie Gen5 x16 lanes delivered directly to its GPU through a single Copprlink cable
- It adapts to dual GPU or triple NVIDIA, AMD or Intel slot: No compatibility tricks are required
External GPU enclosures (EGPU) are not new, but Highpoint’s rocketstor 8631CW has entered the scene with an unusually aggressive tone.
The company says that this external GPU configuration offers a direct PCIE X16 connection to a full -size graphics card through a 1 meter Copprlink Copprlink Copprlink cable.
In addition to its bandwidth for desktop class GPUs, this device admits plug-and-play, OS-agnostic and does not depend on software or controllers.
A closer look at hardware configuration
In the heart of the system is the Host Rocket 1634D interface card, which uses the Broadcom PEX 89048 switch to hold its GEN5 X16 link, with a transfer speed of up to 64 GB/s.
The card fits low profile systems, which measures 68.9 mm x 165 mm, and admits a single CDFP channel.
Admit LED indicators for visual feedback on the state of connection and safe start at hardware and software level.
Connected to that is the 8631C Rocketstor chassis, which uses the piles PCIE 5.0 to maintain the integrity of the signal.
The enclosure admits a full -height, dual or triple length GPU of any important supplier, including NVIDIA, AMD and Intel.
You can handle feeding loads up to 600 W and includes real -time energy monitoring and a double -sleeved cup cooling system with programmable smart fan control for alerts of thermal problems. There is also a posterior panel silence button in the event that the audible alerts become too charlective.
Its dimensions are 370 mm x 170 mm x 88 mm, which makes it large enough to house an RTX 5090 class card, but still compact enough not to overwhelm a desk.
This configuration is aimed at workflows where stability and zero configuration environments are mandatory: think about the training of the AI model, the 8K edition or business grade rendering pipes.
But in a world where laptops are increasingly equipped with built -in powerful GPUs, this enclosure feels more as a solution for edge cases.
A creator looking for the best laptop for video edition or the best portable computer for Photoshop will probably find many capable systems that do not need such configuration, particularly when portability, price and simplicity are taken into account.
That said, as GPU and compact integrated systems improve, the need for such a solution is narrow and the cost increases significantly.
You will need a PCIE slot in your system, a coincidental power GPU and a convincing reason to justify the cost, but if you are dead in the transport of energy RTX 5090 class 5090, this could be the only hardware currently to work.
Highpoint Rocketstor 8631CW is currently sold on the Highpoint website for $ 1,999.
