Some shows appear and disappear almost during the night; Others become institutions. Modern family It is in the last category: more than five years after it ended, it is still one of the most watched programs in Disney+ worldwide.
Modern family It worked from 2009 to the beginning of 2020, and like any program with so many seasons, it is fair to say that it lost part of its freshness over time: where season 1 has a stellar rating of 100% of critics in Rotten Tomatoes, the final season, season 11, only reached 80%. But that is a much higher rating than many rival comedies, and there is still much to praise.
Here’s why Modern family It is a modern classic and one of Disney +’s best shows, or the best Hulu shows if you are in the United States, of all time.
Why is it worth knowing this family

Attend
The first season established the premise for the show. An unidentified filming team (for us) is following the Dunphys to make a documentary to fly over the extended family: Mom and Dad Claire and Phil and their three children; Claire’s father, Jay and his much younger wife, Gloria; Jay’s son, Mitchell, his partner Cameron and his adoptive daughter.
As you can see, the configuration justifies the title: this is a completely modern, multigenerational, multi -regular and inclusive family of everything. And if that were all that was treated, it would probably have been a disaster, preacher and worthy instead of forceful and hilarious. But the writing team is incredibly clear, dialogue and adjustment pieces are often hilarious and the cast is spectacular. And I think their warmth and their big heart really resonate with people whose screens seem to be criticizing them with bad news.
The central cast is brilliant, and although part of the characterization is close to stereotypes: the Camp Cameron, the cyberkerus Jay, the Fiery Gloria, I do not think it has gone from being affectionate to problematic.
You have the real feeling that writers care and love the entire cast, and what cast is. Ed O’Neill as Jay, Sofia Vergara as Gloria, Ty Burrell as Phil, Jesse Tyler Ferguson as Mitchell, Julie Bowen as Claire and Eric Stonstreet as Cameron are lovely. And with the show that lasted so long, almost a lifetime for their younger stars, most of which were adult adults for the final seasons, everyone was given a lot of time to grow.
All the characters are favorites for me, but I think the program was more frequently stolen by Rico Rodríguez as Manny, the older young man who has existed (and someone from whom I cannot separate from What we do in the shadows’ Similarly, entertaining Guillermo, played by Harvey Guillén).
NPR expressed it very well, describing season 1: “Good performance. Great writing. Human characters played by incredible actors. That could be the One Twist Network TV has not tried frequently.”
Writing in Salon, Heather Havrilesky urged us not to touch that remote control. “Between agile writing, the great comic direction and the remarkable moment of all the actors involved,” Modern Family “is one of those rare comedies that never feels uncomfortable or cheesy, since it is accelerating to a blow line … laughs and families? Those two do not join on television in a long time. But once they do? Is it like science: you can’t fight.” And Ken Tucker from Entertainment Weekly also loved it. “Modern Family is unique in the way they juggle so many players so skillfully and makes each cast member a vivid and complex character,” he wrote. “Ah, and it’s also very fun.”
