- A new iPhone box gives older ray models a USB-C port
- Admits a fast charge, and there are versions for most older iPhones
- The iPH0N3 case is now available and costs around $ 55 / £ 40 / au £ 85
If you have an older iPhone that frustrates it with its outdated light port, an engineer has just found an ingenious solution, a telephone box that gives it a USB port.
Swiss engineer Ken Pillonel, who executes the YouTube channel exploring the simulation, previously achieved the reputation of the Internet in 2021 to make the first USB-C iPhone. While that mod iPhone X was more a proof of concept, its new USB-C ‘iPh0n3’ box is available to buy at this time at the Obsoss store.
The box, made of Nylon 12 plastic, is available for most pre-pehone 15 models, which dates back to the iPhone XS and XR (and older models). It admits wireless load and Magsafe, as well as a fast charging and carplay.
The only inconvenience is that accessories that need telephone power, such as external storage or screens, will not work with the USB-C port, since they are blocked only to work with Apple adapters.
But otherwise, the case can help bring its oldest iPhone to the world without a dongle of load and USB-C accessories. The ‘iPh0n3’ case begins from 43.90 CHF (about $ 55 / £ 40 / au £ 85), and although some models are already exhausted, many must be again in stock at the end of August.
How was it built

While the USB-C iPhone box does not do much more than putting a Lightning To-Useb C adapter within a case, the engineering process (explained in the previous video) was more complex than I might think.
In Ken Pillonel’s attempts to solve the fast-charged enigma, he discovered that many existing ray adapters use simple tricks that prevent them from working correctly with all USB-C cables.
On the other hand, your case uses several techniques, including parasitic feeding, to help you detect how your cable is lit, so it always admits a fast 9V charging. Whether you are looking to buy the case or not, the video is an interesting clock.
The final objective of the project is to attract it from an unnecessary update for iPhone by giving its oldest USB-C connectivity model. Naturally, you cannot lengthen the amount of time Apple will admit your iPhone (usually 7 to 8 years in terms of security updates), but it seems an orderly accessory that some will appreciate if you want to move to a life without lightning without updating your phone.
