The National Assembly approved on Tuesday ‘the members of Parliament (wages and assignments) (amendment) bill, 2025’, which supports a 200% increase in the wages and benefits of legislators.
The president of NA, Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, directed the session, where six new bills were also introduced, including those that address the protection of the environment and the detection of mandatory talasmia. These bills were sent to the permanent committees relevant to an additional review.
According to the amendment bill, the wages and subsidies of the members of Parliament have been made equivalent to those of the federal secretaries. The monthly salary and assignments for MNA and senators have been established in RS519,000.
During the discussion, Sadiq’s speaker commented: “You call the Parliament false and yet does not take it seriously. If any member does not want to accept the salary increase, it can provide a written statement.”
The Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar also declared: “Members who do not want to accept the increase in salary should inform the speaker’s office.”
Earlier this year, in a rare sample of unity, the legislators of the ruling alliance led by PML-N supported a proposal of PTI de Imran Khan to increase the salaries of the parliamentarians in 200 times.
Before the amendment, the members of Parliament (MPS) obtained a salary of RS188,000, which included a basic salary of RS150,000 and assignments of RS38,000. After the proposed increase, the salaries and benefits of the MPs increase to RS519,000.
The adjustments to the salaries and benefits of the parliamentarians have traditionally been carried out through amendments to the members of the Law of Salaries and Assignments of Parliament. However, in the 2024-25 financial bill, the Government modified the law, delegating authority to such changes in the Finance Committee.
On January 20, the upper house of Parliament approved the bill of a private member that seeks to train a parliamentary panel in matters related to the salaries and subsidies of the parliamentarians.
