- Thunderbolt 5 approaches the external GPUs to the delivery of real desktop class performance on thin portable computers
- Gigabyte Aorus RTX 5090 AI Box is a dream for advanced users, not casual players
- Heat and energy delivery are important concerns when first level GPUs are executed such as RTX 5090
In Computex 2025, Gigabyte introduced a new external GPU cabinet designed to offer high -performance game capabilities and AI.
The AI AORUS RTX 5090 box is connected through Thunderbolt 5 and is fed by the Nvidia GeForce RTX 5090 badge, following the steps of previous models such as the Aorus GTX 1070 and Aorus RTX 3080 TI, which also presented a high -level NVIDIA GPU at the moment.
With the RTX 5090 widely considered as the best GPU in the market, the AI box promises a desktop class for machines that previously reached the integrated graphics or the Modest Discrete GPUs.
Thunderbolt 5 unlocks a new performance potential
Thanks to the dramatically increased increase in Thunderbolt 5, many of the bottlenecks that once the plagued EGPU configurations are being addressed, which leads users closer to the target of running a high -end GPU in a light and ultra -supply machine.
Theoretically, the Aorus RTX 5090 AI box verifies almost all boxes: avant-garde graphics, future proof connectivity and plug-and-play flexibility. However, EGPU settings still come with inherent limitations.
Despite the lowest latency and greater performance, external GPUs often do not reach the performance of internal GPUs due to data transfer overload and potential inconsistencies of the controller.
Heat and energy management also remains critical concerns, especially with a GPU as hungry for energy such as RTX 5090.
There is also the question of practicality. It is likely that this configuration will be exaggerated for casual games or office tasks, but it will be a convincing option for developers, video editors and 3D artists who need faster PC performance with the flexibility of a mobile configuration.
That said, the price will be a key consideration. Gigabyte has not yet announced the price of the AI box, but with the RTX 5090 that is already ordering a premium, and the Thunderbolt 5 components that are added to the cost, this device will not be cheap.
As a reference, the Gigabyte Aorus GV-N4090ixeb-24gd, launched two years ago, debuted at $ 2,000. The new model could overcome that figure.
