- Android 14 with expandable storage. Wi-Fi 6 and Dolby Vision/Atmos
- Faster processor than Google’s 4K TV Streamer
- $119 / £89 / approximately AU$169
Mecool has added a new Google TV Box to its range of streaming accessories, offering great specs and features, including expandable storage, at a low price.
The MEon1 4K GTV Streaming Box costs $119.99 / £88.67 / about AU$169 and offers content up to 4K HDR with support for Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos. It can upscale HD content to “near 4K quality” and comes with 32GB of built-in storage. There’s even a microSD slot that supports cards up to 128GB for easy expandable storage and there are also two USB 2.0 ports.
MEon1 4K GTV Streaming Box: Key Features
The MEon1 4K GTV Streaming Box has Wi-Fi 6 and Ethernet networking and Bluetooth 5.2. It comes from the factory with Android 14 and is Netflix 4K certified. Since it’s a Google TV box, it’s compatible with Google Assistant, Google Cast, and thousands of third-party apps.
The device supports HDR10, HDR10+ and Dolby Vision, and the supported video codecs are AV1, VP9, H.264 and H.265 (HEVC), which should cover all the bases.
The processor inside the MEon1 is a quad-core Amlogic S905X5M, paired with a Mali G310 V2 GPU, and there’s 2GB of RAM for applications. The ARM Cortex-A55-based processor is clocked at 2.5 GHz, faster than the 1.8 GHz of rival devices like the Google TV Streamer 4K.
The HDMI output supports HDMI 2.1 and VRR and ALLM for gaming.
It’s a decent spec for its price, but it faces a very important rival: the Google TV Streamer 4K. It has a list price of $99 / £99 / AU$159, but I often see it discounted for less.
Google’s product has twice the amount of RAM onboard, so it’s likely to perform better, but while it has Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, it runs an older version of Wi-Fi: 802.11ac. That won’t be a deal breaker for everyone, though, and I don’t think it’s unfair to say that the Google brand is a little better known than Mecool.
Google’s product is also designed to interact with its smart home products, so it’s something to consider if you already have a smart home or think you might want one in the near future.
Mecool MEon1 4K GTV streaming box is now available.
