- Oppo Find X9 Ultra will soon launch globally
- This Android powerhouse will rival the Galaxy S26 Ultra
- Leaks claim it could have a 200MP periscopic telephoto lens with f/2.2 aperture
If you’re a keen observer of the increasingly competitive battle to create the world’s best camera phone, you’ll be happy to know that a new contestant is about to enter the arena.
Chinese phone brand Oppo, a name you may recognize from its UEFA, Wimbledon, Roland-Garros and ICC sponsorships, as well as its flashy Android phones, has confirmed that its most premium mobile phone yet is about to launch globally. And we know its name: Oppo Find X9 Ultra.
This will be the first time that one of the brand’s ‘Ultra’ phones has been launched outside of China. The brand sells many of its phones in Europe, Latin America, Africa and Asia (not the US, although importing is possible), but its more feature-rich phones are generally only sold in its own territory.
For now, we don’t know much else about the phone, not even when it will appear or what it will be like. However, the reliable Digital Chat Station (via Android Headlines) claims that it will have a 200MP periscope telephoto sensor with a large 1/1.28-inch sensor size and f/2.2 aperture. That combination, particularly the bright telephoto aperture, could, in theory, produce some class-leading results.
The Find In other words, stay tuned for more information.
Analysis: The era of Ultra camera phones
For now, the specifications of the Oppo Find X9 Ultra have been kept under wraps. But judging by the name alone, it should have a more advanced camera setup than the Find X9 Pro.
That phone had a 50MP main camera, a 50MP ultra-wide-angle camera, and a 200MP telephoto camera, the latter of which had a 3x zoom.
Those are impressive specs, but they don’t match some ‘Ultra’ phones we’ve seen. The Xiaomi 17 Ultra (above), for example, has the same specs, but the main camera has a 1-inch sensor and the telephoto lens continuously zooms between 3.2x and 4.3x, and Leica designed the lenses.
Another recent mobile, the Vivo
And the phone you’ve probably heard about the most, the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra, has a 200MP main camera, a 50MP ultrawide camera, a 50MP telephoto lens with 5x zoom, and a 10MP telephoto lens with 3x zoom.
It’s clear from those specs that zoom is the name of the game, with a handful of new phones like the Vivo coming with telephoto add-ons that you can buy separately.
Instead of increasing the megapixel count of any of the Pro’s cameras, the Oppo Find X9 Ultra will likely add some unique, custom tech, like Xiaomi’s Leica continuous zoom. Hasselblad has helped with previous Oppo phones, bringing color calibration technology to the Find X9 series, and any major hardware changes will likely bear its name.
The camera hardware in phones from Chinese brands like Oppo, Vivo, and Xiaomi has become incredibly competitive recently, with each of them bumping into each other to offer mind-blowing technology. If the X9 Ultra matches these other powerhouses, I’ll be upgrading from my Galaxy S26 Ultra for a chance to see something new.
