Thousands of NGOs operate without supervision


Islamabad:

The National Committee of the Permanent Assembly on Relief of Poverty and Social Security was told on Tuesday that more than 18,000 NGOs operate throughout the country, but only around 1,000 were officially recorded, with the vast majority flying under the radar.

The committee expressed a serious concern about the presence of unregistered NGOs, qualifying them a potential threat to sensitive national issues and recommended the formulation of a national framework to regulate the sector.

During the meeting, officials also informed the Committee on the progress of several well -being projects, particularly regarding the deadlines granted for completion.

The committee expressed a serious concern about delays in timely execution and demanded greater responsibility.

When expressing its disgust for the incomplete of a pilot project that would be supposed to end in July, the Committee convened the Secretary Finance and the Secretary of Industries and Production to appear in the next session.

The committee also asked the Governor of the State Bank of Pakistan and heads of private banks to appear before the panel at the next meeting to review the coordination problems linked to poverty reduction programs.

In informing the Committee of the Ramazan Aid Package of the Prime Minister, the authorities revealed that they had been assisted of 2.7 million of 3.5 million deserving families through digital wallets.
