- City records earthquake tremors for the fourth day.
- Karachi experiences 26 earthquakes since June 1.
- “Mild tremors can occur for another week.”
Karachi: Tuesday night three more earthquake tremors were felt with intensity that vary from 2 to 3.1 in the port city on Tuesday night, according to the seismic monitoring center of the Department of Meteorology of Pakistan (PMD).
This marked the fourth consecutive day of seismic activity in the port city.
The last activity has taken the total number of tremors in Karachi from June 1 to 26, said the seismological center.
In view of the worrying situation, the chief meteorologist Amir Haider Laghari said that mild tremors can occur for another week as the movement of tectonic plates continues.
Since Sunday, repeated mild tremors have been felt in Landhi, Quaidabad, Malir and the neighborhoods of Karachi, raising concerns among residents. No significant damage or injury have been reported.
Reason behind the tremors
The main meteorologist attributed the ongoing seismic activity to the activation of the Landhi fault line, which he was going through a normalization phase.
According to Haider, soft earthquakes can continue until another week, since energy is gradually released from the failure line. He explained that this slow energy release helps prevent the risk of an important earthquake.
“This particular failure has been activated after several decades,” he said, adding that the superficial depth of recent earthquakes is the reason why they feel more intensely throughout the city.
Haider emphasized that buildings directly on the fault line should be able to resist tremors of up to magnitude 6. He also pointed out that the failures that run through Karachi have been historically identified and documented.
Responding to concerns about cracks that are developed in homes, Haider clarified that such problems are related to structural integrity and not necessarily linked to seismic activity.
He also mentioned the presence of another failure line near Than Bula Khan, contributing to the general seismic activity in Karachi and its surroundings.
