Islamabad: At least three new cases of poliovirus were confirmed by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Sindh on Sunday, which carries the national recount of Pakistan to 17 by 2025.
The Regional Reference Laboratory for the eradication of polyomyelitis at the National Health Institute has confirmed the detection of cases in Lakki Marwat, Waziristan del Norte and Uurkot.
According to a press release, the cases were detected in a 15-month-old girl from UC Takhikhel in the Lakki Marwat district, a six-month-old girl from UC Mir Ali-3 in northern Waziristan, and a 60-month-old boy from UC Chajro in the Uurkot district, Sindh.
“With these new detections, the total number of polio cases in Pakistan in 2025 has increased to 17, including ten Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, five from Sindh, and one from Punjab and Gilgit Baltistán,” said the statement.
“Poly is a highly infectious and incurable disease that can cause life paralysis. The only effective protection is through repeated doses of the oral vaccine of polyomyelitis (OPV) for each child under five years during each campaign, together with the timely completion of all essential immunizations,” he said.
Meanwhile, a special vaccination campaign is currently being carried out from July 21 to 27 in the Bordón Union Councils, synchronized with the Afghanistan subnational polio campaign.
“In addition, a fractional IPV-OPV campaign began in the Chaman district on July 21 and will be implemented in the other six Baluchistan districts as of July 28, according to the statement.
