A machete-wielding man was shot dead by police on Saturday morning, April 11, after stabbing three people.
The incident took place on a subway platform at Grand Central Terminal.
Authorities stated that the violence began around 9:50 a.m. ET on a platform beneath the busy Midtown transit center.
The victims included an 84-year-old woman, a 65-year-old man and a 70-year-old woman.
According to the New York Police Department (NYPD), one victim suffered significant injuries to the head and face, while another suffered an open skull fracture and the third suffered a laceration to the shoulder.
All of them have been taken to the hospital; however, their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.
The incident was reported by a civilian and officers confronted the man holding a machete on the platform.
According to police reports, there was a confrontation that lasted at least ten minutes. The suspects received around twenty orders to drop their weapons, but they pounced on the officers.
An officer fired two shots, hitting the suspect. The suspect died from his injuries, Mayor Zohran Mamdani said.
The two officers were admitted to the hospital, but both are stable.
The suspect was already known to authorities and had been arrested several times. Authorities confirmed that the incident has no association with terrorism.
