Islamabad:
The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) on Tuesday informed the National Committee of Senate Health Services that a three -year prohibition of new medical universities has been imposed due to the shortage of teaching professors.
The committee, who met here with Senator Aamir Waleeduddin in the president, discussed the bill of the PMDC amendment moved by Senator Humayun Mohmand. The bill proposed to include parliamentarians in the PMDC Board. However, Health Minister Mustafa Kamal opposed the proposal.
The president of PMDC, Dr. Rizwan Taj, said that parliamentarians had never been part of the Board, but the president corrected him, stating that a senator and a MNA used to sit on the Board.
Irfan Siddiqui said that the inclusion of political persons would not change the structure of the institution.
Mustafa Kamal told the committee that even he, as Minister of Health, was not part of the PMDC Board.
He argued that Pakistan’s medical professionals were still respected worldwide, and political participation could undermine their reputation.
