“As the National Sports Government Body, our role is to make football accessible to as many people as possible, operating within the Law and International Soccer Policy defined by UEFA and FIFA,” the statement began. “Our current policy, which allows Transgender women Participating in the female game was based on this principle and was supported by an expert legal advice. “

The previous policy required that the transgender athletes who wish to compete in women’s football should show a “blood serum testosterone maintained at less than 5.0 NMOL/L” for a period of at least 12 months before the competition. The athlete must have medical records to test hormonal therapy and annual verified hormonal treatment before the start of each season.
“This is a complex issue, and our position has always been that if there was a material change in the law, science or the operation of policy in base football, then we would review it and change it if necessary,” continued the declaration of the governing body.

“The decision of the Supreme Court of April 16 means that we will change our policy. Transgender women can no longer play in women’s football in England, and this policy will be implemented as of June 1, 2025.”

The main court of the United Kingdom ruled the legal definition of a woman last month. The court of five judges said the ruling did not eliminate the rights for trans people still protected from discrimination according to the United Kingdom law. However, he said that certain protections should be applied only to biological women and not to transgender women.
“We understand that this will be difficult for people who simply want to play the game they love in the genre for which they identify, and we are contacting registered transgender women who currently play to explain the changes and how they can continue involved in the game,” FA said Thursday.
