If it were for President Donald Trump, Washington’s football team would never have changed his name.
The NFL team currently goes through Washington’s commanders, but the old name, Redskins, is what Trump says he would have kept him as if he owned the organization.
“Well, do you want me to make a controversial statement?” Trump told journalists in Morristown, New Jersey, Sunday. “I would not have changed the name. But that is yours, it simply does not have the same ring for me.”

The owner of the commanders, Josh Harris, told Bret Baier in a “special report” in April that, despite his plan to bring the team back to Washington DC on the site of the old RFK stadium, the name of the Redskins would not return.
“The name of the commanders has actually acquired a surprising type of element in our building,” said Harris. “So, people that certain types of players are hard, who love football, are delegated commanders and Jayden [Daniels]For example, he is a commander, and are classified.
“And, you know, the commercial staff has gotten into it, and obviously, we are in a military city here. There are more military personnel than anywhere else, so we are moving forward with the name of the commanders, excited about that and not looking back.”

While it is possible that you have not changed the name, Trump believes that any team that will keep fans no matter what. That is exactly what Washington did last season, arriving at the NFC championship game for the first time in almost three decades under the new Jayden Daniels field marshal.
“But, you know, winning can make everything sound good,” Trump continued. “Then, if they are winning, commanders suddenly sound good. But I wouldn’t have changed the name.”
In terms of the new stadium, political disagreements have surrounded the project of $ 3.8 billion. Less than two months after completing the stadium agreement, the mayor of DC, Muriel Bowser, said the DC Council had delays to approve the last budget, according to sports of the main office.
“If the Board eliminates the terms of the agreement or the budgetary dollars of the budget, kill our agreement with the commanders,” Bowser said last month with a preliminary approval of the plans that need an agreement on July 15.
Before his name comment, a journalist asked Trump potentially intervene if the agreement remains unstable.

“Well, we’ll see what happens,” he replied. “I’ve been looking at the deal, and I don’t blame them. It’s a very important property, it’s a great property. So, we’ll see. If I can help them, I would.
“Ultimately, we control that [land]. The Federal Government finally controls it, so we will see what happens. I saw the plans, I saw the stadium. The owner is a very, very successful and very good man. I know him a little. It would be great for the NFL to be there. I can tell you that. If you want to negotiate a bit difficult, it’s fine for me. “
The reason behind Washington changes its name to the commanders derives from the broad criticism that Redskins is offensive to the American natives.
The team ended up abandoning the name as a result of George Floyd’s protests, calling himself the “Washington football team” until an important change for the commanders in 2022 arrived.
There is still a great contingent that believes that the name and logo should return to the historical franchise, including Senator Steve Daines, a montification Republican, who said he would show support for the agreement to bring a new stadium to the old site to the condition of the team and the NFL would honor the old Redskins logo.
“The irony that they were canceling the culture of the Native Americans when the Dei movement went too far,” Daines said in November 2024. “This is in honor of a Blackfeet chief who was born in Montana. He is very esteemed. The Blackfeet tribe of Montana, its current president and the tribal council signed a letter in a strong support to bring the logo back.

“We have good discussions with the NFL and the commanders. There is good faith in negotiations in the future that will allow this logo to be used again. Perhaps the income that goes to a base that could help the Native Americans in sports, etc.
Harris told Baier that he expects construction to begin at the site in 2027, and the opening day would have a goal for 2030.
