President Donald Trump will sign an executive order on Monday that will eliminate US sanctions against Syria, said the White House, added that some sanctions to former Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad and other people will remain in force.
The sanctions would remain in Assad’s associates, the alleged human rights abusers, drug traffickers, people linked to chemical weapons activities and Daish, White House spokeswoman, Karoline Leavitt, told journalists in an informative session.
In May, Trump announced that he would lift the sanctions to Syria as part of the measures to help the country to rebuild after a devastating civil war.
“He is committed to supporting a Syria who is stable, unified and in peace with himself and his neighbors,” Leavitt said, pointing to Trump’s meeting with the new president of Syria, Ahmed al-Sharaa, during his recent trip to the Middle East.
“This is another promise and promise that this president maintains to promote peace and stability in the region,” he added.
