- It was revealed that South Park season 27, episode 6, which aired on October 15, was actually the season 28 opener.
- The series will return on October 29 with episode 2 of season 28.
- Sources claim that it was always planned for each season to have five episodes.
Comedy Central and Paramount have somehow managed to make south parkThe weekly release schedule is even more confusing, so let’s break it down.
When south park Season 27 began on July 23, the season was thought to consist of 10 episodes. However, when what fans assumed was episode 6 of season 27 aired on October 15, it was revealed to be the premiere episode of season 28.
This means that seasons 27 and 28 consist of five episodes each, which sources told The Hollywood Reporter was the plan all along.
Seasons 27 and 28 of South Park were supposed to have five episodes each.
As THR’s Kevin Dolak reports, “It turns out this is a case of misinformation, a representative for the show suggested on Friday. Season 27 was never intended to be 10 full episodes, and the showrunners had planned from the beginning for seasons 27 and 28 to lean in at five episodes each.”
Indeed, seasons 27 and 28 are one continuous season. Long-running storylines like Donald Trump and Satan’s Loved Son, and Jesus being the South Park Elementary School counselor still have legs in season 28, and they don’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon.
But there’s another factor that could add to the confusion: the two-week delay in the season 27 schedule. The season 27 premiere began with an unexpected delay that extended to episode 2, and episodes aired every two weeks thereafter.
The creators eventually confirmed that they needed more time to prepare the episodes for fans, explaining, “There’s a lot going on in a single day with Trump right now. No one is going to sacrifice getting it right, even if we have to push for it to air, and if that makes the season longer, so be it.”
So now we have a sudden season jump, two-week delays, and erroneous media reports to deal with until the end of the year, all just to enjoy a small slice of south park comedy. Don’t forget that if you’re watching episodes on Paramount+, you’ll also have to wait an extra day to stream them (in the US and UK).
As I said before, if it turns out that something else has been going on behind the scenes, I wouldn’t be surprised.
