UAB officials issued a statement Saturday before the game confirming that two players were injured and a third was in police custody. University officials did not release the names of the students involved.

Court records obtained by The Associated Press identified the players who were stabbed as Joshua Underwood and JaSire Peterson, both defensive linemen. Underwood is a freshman from Fultondale, Alabama, and Peterson is a redshirt sophomore from Union City, New Jersey.

In a news conference Monday, UAB athletic director Mark Ingram said the decision to play Saturday came after careful consideration and after conversations with players.

UAB PLAYERS TAKE HOURS ON THE FIELD AFTER A STABING INCIDENT LEAVES TWO HOSPITALIZED

“We recognize the seriousness of what happened on Saturday morning and we considered, very seriously, not playing the game. It was not an easy decision, but it was only after we learned that the injured players were stable and after the coach was able to have a very honest and caring conversation with our team, that we felt comfortable with the game, but only if the team wanted to play.”

Interim head coach Alex Mortensen also spoke to the media on Monday and said both injured players have already been released from the hospital.

“I have had the opportunity to sit down with our injured players and their families, and they are okay with me telling them that they are out of the hospital and recovering. They appreciate everyone’s thoughts and prayers,” he said.

Mortensen noted that some players decided not to play in Saturday’s game. The team will conclude the season Saturday against Tulsa, where Mortensen said he expects some players to again opt out of playing.

“It’s been a very difficult couple of days for a lot of players and they have a lot of love for each other, that was very evident. I’m not going to go into too much detail about our time together and our meetings, but I really love this team and I love the group of guys that we have.”
