Ubisoft has revealed that it conducted extensive research for the development of Assassin’s Creed Shadows and even took guided trips around Japan in search of inspiration.
This is according to art director Thierry Dansereau, who spoke about the process during an event held to celebrate the game’s first anniversary.
“For almost all assassin’s creed games, trips are organized, so I was one of the lucky ones [on the team] that I had a chance to get there,” Dansereau said.

“We did the tour and visited most of the locations the game has. It was a pretty intense tour, I have to be honest, we visited two or three sites a day and we had experts with us, who explained pretty much everything we asked for.”
In addition to guided tours, the development team also visited museums, watched movies, read books about Japan and its culture, and watched “thousands of photos and videos” to conduct even more research.
“Of course, we are making video games, but for assassin’s creed “We try to be as believable as possible,” he added, “and then it’s also a work of fiction, but we need to have a good understanding of the fundamentals of what we’re doing, so we spend a lot of time researching.”
“We actually did research throughout the entire project to be honest,” he said. “But at first it’s difficult…”
During the same event, voice actor Tongayi Chirisa, who played Yasuke in Darknessspoke about his performance and revealed that he was completely new to gaming when he took on the role.
The game recently celebrated its one-year anniversary and is now available to play on PS5, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC.
