ISLAMABAD:
Jammu and Kashmir Salvation Movement (JKSM) President Altaf Ahmed Bhat has urged the United Nations to maintain its commitment by implementing the historic resolution, which recognizes the right to self-determination of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
In a statement issued on Saturday, he called on the international community, particularly the United Nations, to take immediate steps to resolve the Kashmir dispute in accordance with its resolutions and to address the continuing human rights violations in occupied Jammu and Kashmir. illegally by Indians (IIOJK).
Highlighting the gravity of the situation, Bhat noted that since 1947, the unresolved issue of Kashmir has been a source of bloodshed and suffering for millions of people in the region.
“The people of Kashmir have endured decades of violence, oppression and state-sponsored terrorism at the hands of Indian forces,” he said, emphasizing that the region has become a battlefield where innocent lives are lost daily.
Bhat condemned the actions of India’s fascist regime, accusing it of systematically altering the region’s demographics to turn the Muslim majority into a minority. “Kashmir has become a hell for its residents, with rampant killings, harassment and humiliation inflicted on the population by trigger-happy forces,” he added.
President JKSM further added that since August 5, 2019, following the revocation of Articles 370 and 35A, Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed 955 murders, 2,455 cases of torture and 25,591 arrests of civilians. Additionally, 1,125 structures have been destroyed, displacing families and intensifying the region’s crisis.
The conflict has left 72 women widowed, 196 children orphaned and 134 women victims of gang rape or sexual abuse. These figures underline the serious human rights violations and the urgent need for global intervention. He added.
Reiterating JKSM’s stance, he added that holding a UN-supervised plebiscite remains the only peaceful and viable solution to the Kashmir conflict. He urged the UN to fulfill its legal and moral obligations by ensuring the implementation of its resolutions and allowing the people of Kashmir to decide their political future.
