Team USA had a slippery moment on the ice during two speed skating events at the 2026 Winter Olympics on Tuesday.

The first problem occurred in the third heat of the women’s 500 meter short track speed skating series. Corinne Stoddard faced the Chinese Wang Xinran, the Japanese Rika Kanai and the Italian Arianna Sighel.

Stoddard had great pace from the start. He advanced along the track with Wang to surround her. As the skaters returned to the line, Stoddard fell and eliminated three of his opponents.

Stoddard was stunned when Kanai rose and finished behind Wang. Fellow American Kristen Santos-Griswold finished first in heat five and would qualify for the final race.

Both setbacks were unfortunate events, as medals have been difficult to come by during the early days of the Winter Olympics. As of Tuesday, the United States had only won two medals, both gold.
