Washington: United States has deployed B-2 bombers in a military base on the island of the Indian Ocean of Diego García, strengthening its aerial power near Yemen and Iran amid in the middle of ongoing tensions and a bombing campaign in the region, confirmed the Pentagon on Wednesday.
The Secretary of Defense of the United States, Pete Hegseth, decided to deploy additional combat planes to reinforce naval pentagon assets in the Middle East.
The brief statement of the Pentagon did not mention specific airplanes. However, at least four B-2 bombers have moved to an American-British military base on the island of the Diego García Indian Ocean, according to US officials, speaking on condition of anonymity. That is close enough to get to Yemen or Iran, experts say.
“The United States and its partners are still committed to regional security in the Centcom (area of responsibility) and are prepared to respond to any state or non -state actor that seeks to expand or intensify the conflict in the region,” said Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell in the statement.
“Secretary Hegseth continues to make it clear that, if Iran or his representatives threaten US staff and interests in the region, the United States will take decisive measures to defend our people,” he added.
Centcom refers to the central command of the United States, which includes a region that extends through the northeast of Africa, the Middle East and Central and South Asia.
B-2 bombers are capable of transporting nuclear weapons and, with only 20 of these aircraft in the Air Force inventory, are usually used in moderation. In October, the Biden administration used bombers in their own campaign against the hutis in Yemen.
