US Vice President JD Vance said on Monday that “some crazy man” had tried to break into his Ohio home by banging on the windows, noting that he and his family were not there at the time.
CNN, citing an unnamed US law enforcement source, previously reported that officials were investigating an incident at the home and had detained one person.
“From what I can tell, some crazy guy tried to get in by hammering in the windows. I thank the Secret Service and Cincinnati Police for responding quickly,” Vance said in a post on X.
“We weren’t even home because we had already returned to DC,” he added, asking the media not to show photos of the house with holes in the windows.
Meanwhile, US Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said a man was detained overnight after the attack.
“An adult male was detained by the Cincinnati Police Department after being detained by United States Secret Service personnel for causing property damage, including breaking windows on the exterior of a personal residence associated with the vice president,” Guglielmi said in a statement.
The man was arrested after midnight, he added.
“The United States Secret Service is coordinating with the Cincinnati Police Department and the United States Attorney’s Office as charging decisions are reviewed,” Guglielmi said.
It was the latest episode of political violence directed at an elected American official. Last June, a prominent Minnesota Democratic state assemblywoman and her husband were shot to death by a gunman in what authorities said was a politically motivated killing.
Last April, a man set fire to Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro’s home while the governor and his family were sleeping at the residence.
That attack had similarities to the October 2022 home invasion at the San Francisco residence of Nancy Pelosi, then Democratic speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, when a man struck her husband with a hammer.
