Women’s hockey gold medal returns to the United States.
The Americans rallied from a late deficit to win a 2-1 overtime thriller over their arch-nemesis in Canada.
The Americans began the second period on a power play with a penalty late in the first, but it was Canada who scored the first goal of the game. It was the first goal the Americans allowed in the knockout stage, ending a streak of three hours, 52 minutes and seven seconds of scoreless hockey.

The Canadians took over the power play late in the third period while holding the Americans scoreless, but the United States was able to put it away with just over four minutes left. With the puck in Canada’s zone and with about 2:30 remaining, the Americans pulled their goalie and the risk proved worthwhile as captain Hilary Knight deflected a wrist shot from the top of the zone to tie the game and ultimately force overtime. After regulation time, the shots were 29-28 in favor of Canada.
Four minutes and seven seconds into overtime, Megan Keller made a nifty move and slipped the puck past the Canadian goalie to preserve the gold. It is the first gold medal for the Americans since 2018.
Team Canada lost two games throughout the Olympics, both to the undefeated United States.

Seven of the eight gold medal games in Olympic history have been between Canada and the United States, and the Americans won three of them.
Canada and the United States have also met in the gold medal game in 23 of the 24 IIHF Women’s World Championships and 21 of the 23 4 Nations Cups since international play began in 1987. Excluding the pandemic, the last time the two countries did not meet in a gold medal game at any international tournament was in 2019, and before that, in 1993.
Canada settled for bronze at the 2019 World Championships, while the United States defeated Finland. It remains the only year in which Canada did not finish with gold or silver, while the American streak of playing for gold remains intact.

Canada, however, has only won gold or silver at the Olympics, while the Americans had to settle for bronze in 2006.
Knight’s goal made her the United States’ all-time leading scorer and points leader. He recently became engaged to speed skater Brittany Bowe.
