- Outlook Patch (Build 19426.20218) Broke “Encrypt Only” Emails and Displayed Unreadable Attachments
- Workarounds: Use ribbon encryption or roll back to build 19426.20186 using command prompt
- Microsoft also disabled inline SVGs in Outlook for Web and the new Outlook for Windows
Microsoft released a new patch for Outlook classic and it broke the way encrypted emails work. It is currently working on a solution and in the meantime offers some ways to open encrypted emails in the popular client app.
In a brief update published on January 6, Microsoft said that after updating to current channel version 2511 (build 19426.20218), email recipients may not be able to open “Encrypt Only” messages.
The error manifests itself in the reading pane, where users may receive a message that says “This permission-restricted message cannot be viewed in the reading pane until you verify your credentials. Please open the item to read its contents and verify your credentials.”
Two solutions
After opening the email, users will find a message_v2.rpmsg file attached and will not be able to read the content.
The issue occurs with users who encrypt email using the settings in the Email File dialog box (File > Encrypt), Microsoft explained in more detail. To avoid the problem, there are two possible solutions. For the first one, users need to select the Options ribbon, then select Encrypt and choose Encrypt or Do Not Forward.
The second solution is to roll back to a build before the issue started and then send the email. The problem started with build 19426.20218 and the next working older build is 19426.20186. To roll back Office, users should open an elevated command prompt and run this command:
“%programfiles%Common FilesMicrosoft SharedClickToRunofficec2rclient.exe” /user update updatetoversion=16.0.19426.20186
Email is by far the most targeted vector and the go-to communications platform in the event of initial compromise. Microsoft often patches Outlook to close different holes, and has recently changed the way Outlook handles SVG images.
In an update to the Microsoft 365 Message Center, the tech giant said: “Inline SVG images will no longer display in Outlook for Web or the new Outlook for Windows. Instead, users will see blank spaces where these images would have appeared.”
