Venus Williams became visibly emotional during his media session after the game at the US Open on Monday.

Williams sent questions from journalists after she was eliminated from the last Grand Slam this year in the first round by Karolina Muchva, of the Czech Republic. Williams is a two -time Singles champion of the US Open, but he has not competed in a Grand Slam in the last two years while working through a series of health setbacks.

Williams, 45, seemed to fight tears when he began to reflect on the challenges he faced during his way back to the tennis court.

“When you play unhealthy, it’s in your mind, it’s not just how you feel, you also get caught in your mind.”

“The lights are very bright out there,” said Williams. “I don’t think I had a crowd so much on my side. When I lost those first two games, they were still there at every point. It didn’t matter if I was losing and I was starting to roll quickly, they were just there with me, and felt great.

“I knew when I entered this game that people in this stadium, people in the United States, people around the world were really supporting me, and that felt great. That felt great to have that kind of support.”

After several moments of silence, the moderator announced that the press conference had concluded.

Last year, Williams underwent surgery to address uterine fibroids. He also faced a subsequent health battle after an erroneous diagnosis.

After more than a year of competition, Williams returned to the Court in July. She competed in the Citi Open in Washington, DC

Williams became the second oldest woman recorded to win a tourist level singles title. After his victory, Williams joked that he fought to return to professional competence for health insurance coverage.

“I had to return for insurance because they informed me earlier this year that I am in Cobra,” he said. “So I thought, ‘I have to get my benefits.”
