It’s a good time to try Satellite Messages on your iPhone
Verizon just confirmed the issue with TechRadar and is working to fix it
“We are aware of an issue affecting wireless voice and data services for some customers. Our engineers are committed and working to quickly identify and resolve the issue. We understand how important reliable connectivity is and we apologize for the inconvenience.”
Verizon says it is aware of the issue affecting both voice and data for some customers, but does not show the extent of the impact. It is clearly quite wide; Scroll down and read the comments below.
There is no timeline for a resolution, but Verizon engineers are working on it. So that’s positive.
I use Visible, one of Verizon’s MVNOs, and still have service.
I switched from Verizon to Visible last November during the carrier’s Black Friday – Cyber Monday sale and I’m still seeing service on my iPhone 17 Pro Max, actually 5GUW with two bars of service.
Now, Visible is Verizon’s MVNO, meaning it’s a “mobile virtual network operator” that actually offers its service over Verizon’s network, so it’s peculiar that it’s not affected by the outage… at least so far.
I keep an eye on Verizon’s social channels, mainly @Verizon, @VerizonSupport and @VerizonNews on
Who else has an outage at Verizon? I have no service, full SOS in North Carolina.January 14, 2026

Verizon Network Status Shows No Issues
Based on social media posts and comments from Down Detector, it is clear that the New York metropolitan region, Texas, Florida, Las Vegas, Nevada, and South Carolina are experiencing issues.
I also get a “try again” popup when I use the tool, so I may be experiencing an outage.
For those counting, Down Detector now has over 90,000 reported issues, with many in the comments noting that their phones are showing ‘SOS’ instead of network bars. This likely indicates that the device cannot access the cellular network and instead defaults to satellite connectivity, a feature offered by the iPhone and other smartphones.
The spike is real on Down Detector: as of 12:16 pm ET, there are over 46,000 reported outages and some of my colleagues using Veirzon are seeing ‘SOS’ instead of network bars on their iPhones.
