- Vietnam has issued an order to block the telegram for not cooperating with the authorities by arresting crimes
- According to the authorities, almost 70% of the channels and telegram groups in Vietnam contain harmful content
- A new law requires that social media suppliers store the data of Vietnamese users and share them with the authorities at the request
Vietnam has blocked Telegram for not cooperating with the authorities by stopping the crimes that supposedly occur on the platform.
As reported by PakGazette, the head of the country’s telecommunications department issued the blocking order against telecommunications companies on May 21, 2025, with the obligation to inform the Ministry before June 2.
While the block did not immediately enter into force, the telegram seems to be inaccessible from the country at the time of writing. This means that all those who live or visit Vietnam now need one of the best VPN services to continue accessing the popular courier application of the country.
Vietnam telegram block
According to international and local sources, the Vietnamese police said that almost 70% of the almost 10,000 channels and telegram groups accessible in the country contain “poison and bad information,” Al Jazeera informed. It has even been found that some groups have links with illegal activities, such as drug trafficking or terrorism.
That is why the authorities decided to issue an order to all telecommunications providers in the country “to display solutions and measures to prevent Telegram activities in Vietnam.”
Talking with PakGazette, a Telegram spokesman said he was “surprised by those statements,” added that the team responded to Vietnam’s legal requests in time.
However, according to what a government official told PakGazette, Telegram could not share user data with the authorities when the law requested it.
In fact, Vietnam enforced a controversial law in December last year that requires social network suppliers to store the data of Vietnamese users and share them with the authorities at the request. However, according to Surfshark data, Vietnam had already restricted social networks twice before that, with temporary blocks on Facebook and Instagram in 2016.
Telegram CEO, Pavel Durov, was arrested in August 2024 in France for, among other things, not properly moderate the application to combat crimes that occur on the platform. After that, the telegram seems to have strengthened its moderation policies.
Worldwide, Surfshark registered a total of 34 countries that have prohibited telegram since 2015, either temporarily or permanently, being Vietnam the 35 to do so.
How can a VPN help
Some local journalists and Internet users lamented difficulties in accessing Telegram from Vietnam without a VPN from May 25, 2025.
Local users also confirmed to Techradar that Telegram is blocked in the country at the time of writing, but the VPNs continue to work well to avoid restrictions.
This is due to the fact that VPN services and similar eluding tools come with IP insertion capabilities that allow users to seem to sail from a different country in a couple of clicks.
All you need to do is download a reliable VPN for Vietnam, choose a server in a country where the telegram is not blocked and continue using the application as usual. You can find all updated information on how to unlock Telegram with a VPN on our dedicated page.
