- The VW CEO confirms a GTI version of the next ID 2 Electric model
- A whole family of GTI car will arrive in the next decade
- An electrified golf is also in the cards.
The Volkswagen CEO, Thomas Schäfer, has registered to affirm that the brand plans to boost its iconic GTI flagship to the electric era with the launch of ID 2 GTI.
When everything is going on Hot Hatch’s proposals, Auto Car reports that VW also plans a totally electric version of the ninth generation golf, complete with an iteration with GTI spots, with an “whole group of GTI” that will continue thereafter.
The first EV to obtain the performance treatment will be a version of Rank of ID 2, which was exhibited in the concept Car ID GTI 2023.
This design study had all the classic characteristics of GTI, including an iconic flat background steering wheel, a low driving height and aggressive body work, as well as the famous GTI flagship.
Schäfer told Auto Car that his experience in an early prototype vehicle suggests that the next electric GTI model will be “a monster car.”
There is no established date for the first EV with Cable GTI, but ID 2 will be launched at the beginning of next year, which is the 50th anniversary of the MK1 original MK1 GTI.
GTI needs to be hot but attainable
While talking with Auto Car, the CEO Thomas Schäfer said that the main objective with the electric GTI models is to make them feel different from the standard car, which includes the handling, sound and guarantee that they are exciting to drive.
Until now, Hyundai has shown that this can be done with the formidable Ioniq 5N, but the great weight of the technology required so that it is nice to throw a race circuit also means that it is phenomenally expensive.
GTI’s badge has always represented the attainable yield, with the type of price that means that even those with an available income smell may think about possessing one.
Although there has been no news about the technology that supports the next family of GTI models, Schäfer said in the launch of the ID GTI concept that cars will continue to be “sports, iconic, technologically progressive and accessible”, in addition to being suitable for daily driving.
Until now, Volkswagen electric vehicles have encountered a warm reaction, with early identification models that are soft, without a soul and easy to forget.
With luck, the introduction of GTI will bring part of that emotion of VW to its fully electric range, while the early looks to the next ID 2 show that the German brand is back in the upper form … and back to the physical buttons.
