The candidate of the Popular Party of Pakistan (PPP), Waqar Mehdi, won the victory in the partial election of the Senate for a general seat of Sindh, after the death of Senator Taj Haider.
According to a spokesman from the Pakistan Electoral Commission (ECP), Mehdi received 111 votes, defeating the candidate of Muttahida’s movement Qaumi-Pakistan (MQM-P) Nighat Mirza, who surveyed 36. Two votes were rejected due to an incorrect brand.
The survey was conducted at the Sindh Assembly from 9 am to 4 pm without any rest. The provincial electoral commissioner and the retention officer, Ejaz Anwar Chauhan, confirmed that 149 legislators cast their votes during the process.
The Senate headquarters had fallen vacant after the approval of the veteran PPP legislator, Taj Haider. Mehdi will now serve in the upper house of Parliament until March 2027.
