The OpenAi issue, its business and intentions for the future of AI can finally be resolved. In an open letter, the CEO and co -founder of Openai, Sam Altman, described the plans to keep Openi working under the supervision of a non -profit organization. In addition, the business gain side is the transition to a public benefits corporation (PBC).
A PCB is remarkable because it means that although that portion of Openai will still be interested in obtaining profits, it will have a larger purpose, one that aims to serve the good of society.
In more practical terms, Altman wrote: “We want to put incredible tools in everyone’s hands … We want open very capable models. We want to give our users a great freedom on how we allow them to use our tools within the broad limits, even if we do not always share the same moral framework and that our users make decisions about Chatgpt’s behavior.”
In recent years, the former partner and co -founder of Openai, Elon Musk, has sued Openai for leaving his non -profit roots behind, and others have expressed concern about the non -open key models. Altman previously admitted that he was on the wrong side of that argument, and Musk finally lost his case.
Now, however, Operai and Altman seem to be moving in the direction in which Musk and open source critics want.
Ai for good
The change of heart occurs when Altman admits that in the first days, “we did not have a detailed sense of how we were going to achieve our mission” and also admitted that some in Openai at that time thought that AI “should only be in the hands of a few trusted people who could” handle it. “
However, the perspective now, especially as artificial general intelligence (AGI) is on the horizon, is “we want to build a brain for the world and make it very easy for people to use for whatever they want,” Altman wrote.
The Go-Forward Plan is that Openai’s non-profit organization is “the largest and most effective profit non-profit organization in history that will focus on using AI to enable the results of greater leverage for people.”
Person questions
Altman also wants to develop “beneficial AGI” and points out the importance of safety and alignment. “As the AI accelerates, our commitment to security is strengthened. We want to ensure that democratic AI wins the authoritarian.”
Altman has traveled a long way since he was suddenly expelled at the end of 2023 by, among others, Ilya Sutskever, previously scientific and main co -founder of OpenAi. He returned a few days later. There is a feeling in the new letter that AI and the next AGI are larger than a person, a company and an AI like chatgpt.
As for what this will mean for the future of Openai, Chatgpt and AGI, it is not clear. The PCB can focus on the public good, but will still be interested in obtaining profits. How the non -profit supervisor impacts that it is not clear.
Operai says he will talk to the general lawyers in California and Delaware, who helped him reach this decision, along with his largest commercial partner, Microsoft (Copilot base models are based on GPT), about the implementation of their new plan.
“We believe this prepares us to continue making quick and safe progress and put a great AI in all,” Altman wrote.
We’ll see.
