Jacob Elordi has revealed that his northern accent during Wuthering Heights It came from an unexpectedly ordinary place: the bathroom.
The Brisbane-born actor, who plays Heathcliff in Emerald Fennell’s new adaptation of the Emily Brontë classic, said he perfected the accent through incessant repetition at home.
“I just practice it in the bathroom, over and over again,” Elordi explained, offering a glimpse into her routine.
He added that he especially liked the peculiarities of the local pronunciation and said: “I like meks and teks, instead of take. I like MEK, TEK,” spelling it carefully.
Elordi, 28, stars alongside Margot Robbie’s Catherine in the film, which is set on the windswept Yorkshire moors and has already generated a stir and some controversy ahead of its release.
The film’s casting choices and darker, more provocative elements have sparked debate online, but that hasn’t dampened the anticipation.
At the London premiere on Thursday night, large crowds gathered in the rain to catch a glimpse of the two Australian stars as excitement around the project continues to build.
The filming itself was not without incident.
Elordi suffered second-degree burns during filming and was briefly hospitalized after an accident in the shower.
She later explained that while rubbing her feet in a steam shower, she leaned back and accidentally burned her back on the steam knob.
The injury came after long, physically demanding days on the moors, where he had been rolling on dirt to fully inhabit Heathcliff’s raw intensity.
Director Emerald Fennell admitted that she was initially alarmed when she heard that Elordi had been rushed to the hospital, fearing something much more serious.
Elordi, however, later joked about the mishap, likening it to extreme method acting, and spoke of feeling a “spiritual” connection when he first arrived at the dramatic filming locations.
Wuthering Heightsstarring Elordi and Robbie, will be released in theaters on February 13, and audiences will be eager to see how this bold reinvention of the literary classic is translated to the big screen.
