- White Moonlight ThinkPad will be launched in China on July 11, according to intrigues teasers
- Lenovo’s campaign draws quality parallels with watches and violins
- Specifications and prices are still a mystery for now, but buyers are likely to pay a premium
Lenovo is preparing to launch its first Thinkpad totally white portable computer, breaking with the established tradition of the Mate Black Business Machines brand.
The new model, joking in Weibo under the name of “White Moonlight”, will be presented in China on July 11.
The teasers, with a clock and a violin, suggest (I would say) with the inherited design and mechanical precision. Lenovo clearly suggests that crafts and the level of detail in their white Thinkpads of the moonlight are on par with those two finely elaborate objects.
Thousands of refinements
Lenovo mentions 0.1 mm tolerances and precision of 0.1 degrees in the teasers, placing the laptop as technically refined and aesthetically distinctive.
The complete specifications are still secret for now, but it is likely that White ThinkPad reflects other recent models of 2025.
This suggests support for the processors of the Intel Core Ultra 200 series, including the VPRO and EVO platform options. AMD variants with Ryzen AI Pro 300 series are also a possibility.
This color change is rare for the ThinkPad line, which has prevented more light finishes apart from some silver editions.
While some lifelong fans, including myself, can miss the traditional red track point that traditionally anchors the ThinkPad identity, the launch seems to indicate a change in the company’s design approach.
The Lenovo Teaser posters speak of “thousands of refinements”, “unique crafts” and a device that is “built with precision, perfectly presented.”
Marketing is clearly designed to evoke feelings typically associated with the elements of quality inheritance instead of laptops. The writing as “± 1 second error for a thousand years” and “assembly deviation of ± 1.0 μm” blur the line between the engineering metaphor and the specifications of the laptop.
It remains to be seen if the final product will offer a complete deviation from the standard designs of ThinkPad or simply wraps a white family construction. It will also be interesting to see if Lenovo charges a cousin for its fresh layer of moonlight.
Anyway, it will be worth seeing exactly what Lenovo presents in the next few days.
