Why the Atlanta Hawks traded Trae Young to the Washington Wizards

The Atlanta Hawks are trading their four-time All-Star guard Trae Young to the Washington Wizards.

According to the trade agreement agreed upon between both teams, the Hawks will receive veteran guard CJ McCollum and wing Corey Kispert.

Sources reveal that although the Hawks once had long-term plans for Young, 27, the team performed better with him sidelined.

When he suffered a sprained knee, the superstar was unable to play from October 31, 2025 to December 14, 2025, and the Hawks posted a 13-9 record.

He played five games since his return and the Hawks suffered losses in all of them.

So, the management was working with the star player’s agents to find him a new destination.

According the athletic, Wizards, who are currently in a rebuilding phase, became a natural and realistic option for Young to attempt to rehab.

League sources suggest that the Wizards, due to their youth movement, were identified as a suitable destination for Young months before the actual completion of the trade.

The franchise needed a point guard and they were ready to give him all the time Young needed to get fully fit and healthy.

The front office believes that with the inclusion of Young, they could see the best offensive version of their young players, including Alex Sarr, Kyshawn George, Tre Johnson and Bilal Coulibaly.
