Sabalenka had not lost a set in this year’s tournament until the first set against Siegemund drops in the quarterfinals.

Siegemund, 37, plays a little orthodox tennis style that can leave nervous opponents. Siegemund has the ability to change the depth, speed, angles and turns of their shots over and over again, which can frustrate any opponent and address the type of power that Sabalenka brings to the court.

Sabalenka accredited Siegemund for playing a “smart game.”

“It’s not as if it were an annoying game. It’s an intelligent game. It’s really causing everyone to work against it,” said Sabalenka. “You know you have to work for each point. It doesn’t matter if you’re a great server, if you’re a big batter. You have to work. You have to run. And you have to win the victory.”

Siegemund was the oldest player and the women’s player in the quarterfinals. He arrived at All England Club this year with a 2-5 race record before annoying Madison Keys, No. 6, and took Sabalenka to the edge.

For Sabalenka, victory moves her to Wimbledon’s semifinals for the third time in her career. He lost in his two previous semifinal appearances of Wimbledon, in 2021 and 2023.

Wimbledon is the only Grand Slam tournament in which Sabalenka has not appeared in the final. The world number 1 has won the Australian Open twice, the US Open once and lost in the France Open.

Sabalenka will face the American Amanda Anisimova in the semifinals on Thursday, where she will seek to make her way and reach the final in the Grass-Court Grand Slam tournament.
