Winter rains lash parts of Karachi amid strong winds

KARACHI: Heavy winter rains lashed several parts of the city on Thursday, as predicted by weather experts, giving the city a cool and misty embrace.

The rains, accompanied by strong winds, began under the influence of the existing westerly system near the port city.

Areas like Surjani Town, Musharraf Colony and Hub were the first to receive the downpour.

Rain was also reported in North Karachi, II Chundrigar Road, Nagan Chowrangi, Surjani, Malir, Ahsanabad, Dalmia, Scheme 33, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, buffer zone with drizzle in PECHS.

According to weather experts, the weather in the port city is expected to turn colder after the rain.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has said that heavy rain along with strong winds is expected in Karachi, Jamshoro, Thatta, Hyderabad and surrounding areas in the next three hours.

The Meteorological Office has forecast strong and dusty winds with thundershowers in Karachi, leading to increased cold conditions from Friday to Sunday.

Meteorological analyst Jawad Memon has said that wind speeds are expected to remain between 25 and 40 kilometers per hour, while in most areas between eight and 22 millimeters of rain are expected.

Memon also noted that there is a 20% to 30% chance of a hail storm in some places.

Furthermore, in view of the showers, K Electric (KE), the sole electricity supplier in the city, has urged citizens to exercise caution and advised them to be careful when using electrical appliances during strong winds and rain.

Unsafe use of electrical appliances in rain and standing water can lead to accidents, a KE spokesperson said.

The utility provider further said that citizens should keep a safe distance from internet and television cables and broken cables.
