- Apple is not merging ipados and macOS, says Craig Federight of the company
- Do “lose what makes the iPad iPad,” Federight explained
- Ipados 26 Try to balance the simplicity and characteristics of the power user
Enough time in Apple’s ecosystem and listen to a question appears again and again: “Will Apple ever merge your iPads and Macs?” If the question is asking the question for an experienced journalist or his uncle when you come to visit, many people want to know the answer.
After a WWDC 2025 where Ipados 26 was equipped with a lot of characteristics similar to Mac, from the improved window management to a menu bar on screen, that question has raised its head again. However, it is something that Apple has just left and headed in front.
In an interview with Swiss Tech Rafael Zeier journalist (through Macrumors), Apple’s software chief Craig Federight, expressed it in this way: “With macOS, it would lose what makes the iPad iPad, which is the final tactile device.
In other words, Macos Tahoe is simply not designed for tablets. But while putting the complete macOS on an iPad might have no sense at this time, Apple is still happy to ask for a borrowing ideas of each platform and spread them around their products, as we saw on WWDC.
Will Ipados and Macos merge?
So why not simply leave fully separated iPados and macOS? Why share characteristics between platforms, which inevitably lead to questions about the fusion of iPads and Mac?
According to Federight, “we want to retain all the simplicity of the iPad, but still allow iPad users to deepen and even more promote it at their own rhythm to do more.” That means adding characteristics that can improve the experience for more demanding users, without adding unnecessary complexity.
To that end, Apple has designed its new iPados functions so that you can alternate and deactivate the mode of multiple windows. If you prefer the old way of working, with full screen applications that do not overlap, you can use it. If you want to use multiple windows as you can in macOS, you can change in that way.
However, there is one more consideration: the rumor that Apple plans to launch a 19 -inch folding device that blurs the line between the iPad and the Mac. Apparently, this will be launched around 2028, and it will be fascinating to see how Apple’s software handles said product. Maybe we will finally know if Apple ever plans to merge ipados and macOS.
