The World Athletics Council announced on Wednesday that athletes who want to compete in female categories in the World Championship must undergo a “unique test in life” for eligibility.
The test will be for the SRY gene, “a reliable proxy to determine biological sex” with a cheek swab or a blood test, the organization said in a statement.
“The philosophy that we appreciate in world athletics is the protection and promotion of the integrity of women’s sport. It is really important in a sport that tries to permanently attract more women who enter a sport that believes that there is no biological glass roof. The test to confirm biological sex is a very important step to ensure that this is the case,” said Athletic World President Sebastian Coe.

“We are saying, at the elite level, to compete in the women’s category, you must be biologically feminine. It was always very clear to me and for the World Athletics Council that gender cannot overcome biology.”
The organization announced the potential test in March, when COE said the tests were “necessary” to protect women’s sports.

Trump signed the executive order of “no men in women’s sports” in February to prevent biological men from playing in girls and women’s sports. The NCAA said that a “student man assigned to birth may not compete in a team of women.”
The previous policy, which had been in force in 2010, allowed biological men to compete in the category of women after undergoing at least one year of testosterone suppression treatment.
